Meet Matt
What inspired you to become a teacher?
I’ve always been interested in English and communication, as well as reading and telling stories. I think that helping others to practice their communication skills and learn the English language is a really fun way to practice my own communication skills and learn about the language.
What is your favorite activity to do with children?
One of my favorite activities with the children is to break a paragraph down into its most important parts, then rearrange them and ‘fix’ them so that the paragraph works better. We look at and create a topic sentence, then make sure that the supporting sentences actually support it and are backed up with evidence. To me, breaking down paragraphs is like taking the motor of a car apart, and the kids seem to really enjoy ‘getting their hands dirty’ when working.
What is a fun fact about you that your students probably don’t know?
The kids have no idea that I lived in Alaska for six years. (Just kidding, I remind them of that every day.) Seriously, however – the kids might not know that I still buy and collect action figures, read comic books, and play video games – I don’t really feel like I ever actually grew up.
What do you like most about our school community at EFB?
I enjoy working with everyone here – the teachers are fun and creative and the administration is open-minded and gives us a lot of freedom. I feel appreciated and supported at EFB and it’s easy to see that everyone really cares about the students and their well-being.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
If I could have one superpower, it would be the ability to fly. I love the idea of traveling and think it would save me a lot of time and money!
